Employee engagement is something companies know they should care about. Chances are you might have been involved in an “employee engagement initiative”- whether you know about it or not. Unfortunately very few employee engagement initiatives address the root causes of disengagement: lack of autonomy, mastery and purpose.
This infographic makes the case for creating communication autonomy with the help of (internal) social networks. It’s obviously not a silver bullet solution, but at least it addresses one of the core issues.

Personally I get slightly annoyed when I see band aid solutions to employee engagement. I think autonomy is probably easier to address than purpose. By giving people more autonomy you show respect and treat employees as adults. And as Richard Branson says: “if you treat people as adults, you get adult behaviour back”.
